Darryl Glover

The Institute for Engagement & Negotiation (IEN) at the University of Virginia is pleased to announce that Darryl Glover is the recipient of the 2021 Gerald P. McCarthy Award for Leadership in Environmental Conflict Resolution. The McCarthy Award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates leadership in preserving and protecting the Commonwealth's environment through collaboration.

Darryl received this award for his multiple achievements in soil and water conservation over many years, throughout the state of Virginia, including successes in technical programs and expansion of diversity and inclusion in soil and water conservation. One recent example is Darryl’s collaboration with the Virginia State University’s (VSU) Small Farm Outreach Program to develop an agreement to share resources for the purpose of reaching and enabling diverse communities and Farmer-producers to participate in soil and water conservation programs. He has sought to implement his philosophy of “Affirmative Engagement” to ensure greater access to environmental programs and opportunities. In addition, his collaborative partnership with the VSU’s Small Farm Outreach Program has supported the Chesapeake Bay’s Watershed Implementation Plan.

In addition to his work with VSU’s Small Farm Outreach Program, Darryl has demonstrated leadership with 47 soil and water conservation districts in Virginia by enabling districts to share funds and resources with less-resourced districts. This exemplifies a collaborative approach and solution to disparities and different demographics across districts. Though his leadership, he has expanded the effort and delivery of diversity and inclusion across all soil and water conservation districts – through staff, programs, and policies.
